The Noelex 25 is another New Zealand designed trailer sailer built to the ideas of Noel Honey and Alex Trethewey, hence the name ‘Noelex’. The first production model  incorporated many design changes by the builder, Steve Marten, he re-designed the cabin top, the interior and changed the keel to a dagger board. He also raised the solid top to give more headroom and lowered the mast height by one metre. We like the NZ designed boats as they tend to built for higher wind conditions making them safe and stable.

Production commenced in 1978. The first one was numbered 500. The pop-top came much later during production, starting with yacht 747. Number 800 was the first to have an interior liner. The last Noelex 25 build in New Zealand is number 911. Marten Marine sold the enterprise to an Australian company, Noelex Yachts Australia Pty Ltd of Goolwa SA. Sadly this firm no longer exists. The company went into liquidation in June 1995. In recent years Austral Yachts of South Australia acquired the building and marketing rights. Only two are believed to have been produced by Austral, numbers 1027 and 1028. Quo Vadis is hull number 952.

Nevertheless, a total of 525 or so NX25’s have been constructed and it seems that all but one are still sailing! There are currently 257 or so Noelex 25 yachts in Australia and 268 in New Zealand. The Noelex 25 is a fast racer and an ideal cruiser and due to its self tacking headsail can be enjoyably sailed single handed by an experienced sailor.

The Noelex 25 has a rounded underwater profile with a retractable fin centreboard and a stern rudder blade that swings away. It is a light displacement design; the outboard motor is inside the cockpit in a well where it can be conveniently got at. The standing rigging is simplicity itself, a ¾ fractional rig – there are only three parts to the standing rigging, the forestay and two cap shrouds, they join the mast 1.8 metres from the top. The top section of the tapered mast is unsupported. The shrouds are swept back 34° and attached to the chainplate fittings some 600 mm rearward of the mast base. There is a spreader fitted 2.8 m up from the mast base. There is no backstay and there are no lower shrouds – making stepping the mast easy and quick.  Having a fractional rig the N25 has a relatively larger mainsail and a smaller non-overlapping jib, unlike a masthead equivalent. The small, light, self-tacking jib is easily manageable, the sheeting loads are down and no winch is required. The main is the more important sail; the boat sails well with just a main alone. A genoa can be added for improved light wind performance. For downwind sailing the jib is substituted by a spinnaker. In windy conditions the jib can be taken in without the boat rounding up unlike masthead rigs. In stronger winds the unsupported top portion of the mast falls away bending the mast, flattening the sail and thereby lessening the tendency for the boat to heel excessively. This arrangement leads to a sailboat that is easy to rig and easy to sail, is a good up-wind performer and it copes well in stronger winds.
